Within Gawler there are a number of structures of historical significance. The structures may be State or Local Heritage places, Contributory Items or simply located within a Historic (Conservation) Policy area. In some cases minor works to a heritage property (including internal alterations, fences or painting) requires approval from Council that would not otherwise be required. This information sheet may assist in determining whether the development you are proposing requires approval.
Heritage Advisory Service

Development of State Heritage Places
All development applications affecting State Heritage Places must be referred to the State Government's State Heritage Unit (Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources) as part of Council's assessment.

Church Hill State Heritage Area
If you have a property located in the Church Hill State Heritage Area, the Church Hill Management Plan may assist you in maintianing the heritage value of your property. This document has been prepared to assist Council and residents in the future planning for Church Hill State Heritage Area. The purpose of this document is to strengthen the existing policies and requirements, and provide design guidance with respect to signage, fencing, verandah, roofing, dwelling extensions, doors and windows, carports and new infill development within the area.

Local Heritage Grant Scheme
Council’s Local Heritage Grant Scheme is available to assist owners of Local Heritage Places with conservation work. Subject to formal application in the form provided by Council and application prior to work commencing, this grant is available for actual conservation work to the building exterior only. Gawler Historic Walls Scheme
Gawler Council has identified a public benefit in supporting restoration of historic walls and has set aside $25,000 in the 2013/14 Budget to assist.
The public benefit is to help maintain Gawler’s historic character and help promote Gawler as a place to visit and do business.
Gawler has over 300 historic walls and many are in poor condition affecting the amenity of historic areas.

Historic Walls in the Public Environment
In 2007 the Town of Gawler and McDougall & Vines Heritage Consultants produced the Historic Walls in the Public Environment – Gawler SA – Conservation Strategy. This document catalogues walls of historic importance in the Council area, identifies common construction and management problems, and suggests some of the best and cost effective methods of repairing, maintaining and preserving these walls.
